Questions
What is the difference between OSCU and VSCU?
Both connect your invoicing or ERP system to eTIMS through an API. KRA describes OSCU as suitable for taxpayers whose invoicing is always online, and VSCU as suitable for taxpayers undertaking bulk invoicing who are not always online.
Can we integrate with eTIMS ourselves, or do we need a verified integrator?
KRA allows both. A business can self-integrate, which means developing, testing and certifying its own system, or use a KRA-verified third-party integrator's solution. Self-integration suits a business whose invoicing lives in custom software.
Who needs a system-to-system eTIMS integration?
Businesses that invoice from their own software, especially at volume. Small non-VAT businesses can use KRA's eTIMS Lite on the web, by USSD or through the mobile app, and do not need an integration at all.
What happens to expenses without an eTIMS invoice?
Since January 2024, the Finance Act 2023 has disallowed expenses not supported by an eTIMS invoice, with some exemptions. From January 2026, KRA validates income and expenses in returns against eTIMS data. Confirm how this applies to your business with your tax adviser.
Can eTIMS be connected to our M-Pesa and billing system?
Yes. That is the most useful version: the invoice is issued with its KRA record, the payment settles against it, and reconciliation covers both.
